How to Host a Casual Wine Tasting Party

It's a great time for you to host a low-key wine tasting party with some of the great wines from AJ's Summer Wine Spectacular. Our cellar masters have hand-selected over 40 wines this year, so finding some great wines for your party is easy. And with all of them costing $12.99 or less, hosting the party won't set you back a whole paycheck.

  1. Pick a theme for your tasting.
    • Wines from the same region (like Napa, or France).
    • Wines from the same varietal (grape) - but from different regions.
    • Or try several different varietals - 2 red and 2 whites.
    • 4 to 6 wines for comparison and rating is about the right number.
  2. Invite Your Friends
    1. Keep it simple with 6 to 16 guests.
    2. One bottle of wine can easily be poured in small amounts for up to 16 people.
  3. Download our easy tasting sheets. Taking notes does two things: it helps develop the ability to describe the wine in your own terms and it provides you with a wonderful "diary" of wines that you have had - which is helpful when you want to purchase wine. You should also provide your guests with a list of the wines you are pouring and notes on the grape varieties.
  4. Choose some simple foods to serve. Different types of cheeses, cold shrimp, chicken skewers, pate and olives. Try to have a balance between salty foods, rich foods, delicate foods. Bread, crackers and fruit are also nice. AJ's has a great Wine Pairings Guide, which can help you if you want to get into more detailed pairings.
  5. Provide lots of water to drink between sips, and put out some buckets in case people want to spit out some of the wine. This isn't necessarily because they dislike the wine, but many wine hobbyists swallow only a little (if any) of each wine presented during a tasting, in order to keep control of their senses.
  6. A colorful floral arrangement prominently featured in your home and a favorite CD are simple touches that will go a long way to set the mood, whether it be laid-back, casually chic or festive!
  7. Time to relax, mingle with your friends and enjoy tasting great wines.
Safety First: Encourage your guests to take taxis so they can relax and really appreciate the evening!
