What is the origination of the name A.J.'s Fine Foods?
The initials A. J. are for Andrew Joseph Bayless, the original owner of the Bayless grocery chain.
The Bayless family liquidated the A.J. Bayless grocery chain in the 1980s. The assets of the company passed through several hands in one form or another before coming to Bashas’, but it was the first new owner that developed the concept for an upscale, gourmet format. As an homage to Bayless founder A.J. Bayless, this company settled on “AJ’s” as the name of its new brand–even though the Bayless family was out of the picture by that time. By the time Bashas’ acquired Arizona Supermarkets, Inc. in 1993, the small chain of nine stores included the original two AJ’s locations (Lincoln/Scottsdale and Central/Camelback), plus seven locations operating under the Q-Fresh name. The Q-Fresh stores became Bashas’ stores, while the AJ’s brand was left to continue on its own.

Why does each store not carry the same product selection?
AJ’s Fine Foods prides itself on creating an atmosphere specific for each store’s clientele. The buyers in our individual AJ’s stores have the autonomy to search worldwide for an extensive, eclectic variety of items, but not all items sell equally well in all of our stores.
This does not mean, though, that we can’t accommodate our customers. If there is an item you’ve seen at another AJ’s location that you would like your store to carry, just let us know and we would be glad to forward that information to your store. We will also provide a contact for you so that you can follow up on the status of your order.
